Reducing Household Food Waste With Earth & Wheat

We’re all very conscious about our environment and one of the areas we can make an improvement with relative ease is food wastage in our homes.

Earth & Wheat's mission is to reduce food waste, feed people in need and support bakers.

Earth & Wheat is the world’s first ‘wonky bread’ subscription service, launched by university student James Eid in March 2021. Aged 20, Eid is also a fourth-generation baker at family-owned business Signature Flatbreads.

Using his access to the established bakery, Eid’s mission is to reduce food waste at the production source before it even reaches the shop floor. Earth & Wheat is now onboarding other bakeries to join the fight against food waste and have now launched pre-orders for their wonky broken biscuit box.

And for every box purchased, the start-up donates a meal to food charities in the UK.

The company has invested in software with integrated logistics to streamline a more efficient method in rescuing surplus bread from bakeries across the UK.

According to food charity WRAP, 15.8% of food waste is at the point of production.

Shelagh Fogarty has been talking to James Eid, founder of Earth & Wheat, about how households can reduce their food waste.
